Satellite falling to Earth
By Ralph Ellis, CNN
November 7, 2013 -- Updated 2050 GMT (0450 HKT)
|
(CNN) -- A European satellite that ran out of fuel will start falling in the next few days, and fragments of the disintegrating 2,000-pound spacecraft are expected to strike the Earth's surface.
Nobody knows where or when the fragments will hit, but the European Space Agency has said the parts are likely to fall into the ocean or unpopulated areas. Potential spots will be narrowed down closer to re-entry, ESA said on its website.
Re-entry probably will occur Sunday or Monday, Rune Floberghagen, mission manager for the Gravity Field and Steady-State Ocean Explorer, better known as GOCE, told the New York Times.
GOCE was launched in 2009 to map variations in the Earth's gravity in 3D, provide ocean circulation patterns and make other measurements.
ESA's website said the satellite "became the first seismometer in orbit" in March 2011 when it detected sound waves from the earthquake that struck Japan.
GOCE was expected to fall much earlier but fuel consumption was less than expected. In August, the satellite's altitude was lowered to about 139 miles, lowest of any research satellites, to improve the accuracy of the information being gathered, ESA's website said.
GOCE ran out of fuel October 21. On November 4, ESA's website said the satellite was orbiting the Earth at 119 miles and the rate of descent would increase significantly in coming days.

PAGASA said residents in low-lying and mountainous areas under the storm signals are alerted against possible flashfloods and landslides.
Those living in coastal areas under signal nos. 4, 3 and 2 are alerted against storm surges which may reach up to a seven-meter wave height.
The weather bureau said heavy to intense rainfall (10 to 30 millimeters) is expected within the 600-kilometer diameter of the typhoon.
Yolanda is seen to make landfall over the Samar-Leyte area on Friday.
After hitting Guiuan or Abuyog, Leyte, the typhoon is expected to traverse the provinces of Biliran, the northern tip of Cebu, Iloilo, Capiz, Aklan, Romblon, Semirara Island, the southern part of Mindoro and Busuanga, Palawan.
Yolanda will exit the Philippine landmass on early Saturday morning moving toward the West Philippine Sea.
PAGASA warned that sea travel is risky over the seaboards of Northern Luzon and over the eastern seaboard of Central Luzon.
The approaching super typhoon is considered as the strongest tropical cyclone to hit the country this year and is stronger than last year's deadly Typhoon Pablo.
President Benigno Aquino III said Yolanda poses called for cooperation among citizens as the country braces for Yolanda.
"This is a very real danger, and we can mitigate and lessen its effects if we use the information available to prepare," Aquino said in a televised address.

MAN SUCCESSFULLY SUES WIFE FOR UGLY CHILDREN
A wonderful article from Russia Today came to my attention yesterday, Chinese man sues wife over ugly child – and wins $120,000, and good on him. Expect many more of these lawsuits in the future. It has always bugged me the way women commoditise their bodies: slathering on cosmetics, changing their hair colour, getting boob jobs, injecting botox into their faces and the list goes on and on. Apart from the fact we’re told we men should not objectify women when women clearly are the biggest sexual objectifiers of their bodies, I found myself worried that such women have no honour. A big part about honour is honesty and a woman with a fake body is not being honest about herself. For me as a man, I look at a woman’s body and her features to guage how healthy she is physically and if she would produce good children for me because frankly I’m shopping for a good mother for my children. Sure, once I’ve ascertained that the woman in question is healthy and well-formed, then I’ll worry about her IQ and maternal temperament, but I make no apologies for selecting out the biologically weak women because this is my children’s future and a good parent cares about the future they give their children. A good parent wants their children to be healthy, attractive and well looked after. Selecting a decent mother is the single biggest thing a man can do to make sure his children have the best start they could have in life. Incidentally, let that be a warning to you women out there who date men who say they don’t want kids, they probably don’t have very high standards.Of course, I can see why this man sued his wife. She lied. She lied about her physical health and attractiveness. Now, I’m not attracted to Asian women, but I know what ugly looks like.
This is the face of his wife before surgery |
This woman committed fraud and I feel for the poor husband here. He obviously was looking out for the best interests of his children when he selected this woman, meanwhile she was only thinking about the best interests of herself. This woman frankly should not have been able to reproduce because she’s the carrier of genetic refuse. Think about it, would you want to have children with a haemophiliac, a person with Huntington’s victim or Down’s syndrome? Of course you wouldn’t, and not because you hate the person with the disease, but because you love your future children too much to put them through such torment. I applaud the judge’s decision here in this case, this man’s children have been afflicted in a way that will stay with them all their lives and if we give them cosmetic surgery too then this crime will only repeated itself. I’m hoping in the near future we will see many more cases like this and more lawsuits against women who get cosmetic surgery. Beauty is not skin deep, it’s in your genes and if you think otherwise you’re the shallow one here.

Jinggoy Estrada Arrested After Trying to Smuggle Money Inside His Breasts to US
SAN FRANCISCO, California — Officials inside San Francisco International Airport detained and arrested Senator Jinggoy Estrada, after the lawmaker tried to get past customs while in possession of huge amounts of money.
Estrada, who came to San Francisco via a connecting flight from Hong Kong, was initially reported to accompany his wife to the United States, to seek a second opinion from US-based doctors for a lump in her wife’s breast.
But it turns out, his wife was not with him on the trip, and it was the senator instead who had a lump on his breast.
Airport authorities grew suspicious of the senator after they noticed him all sweaty, jumpy and saw a noticeable bulge on the upper-body-area of his clothes.
“We asked him what it was,” said SFIA Head of Security Trevor Philip Ogg. “The cocky son-of-a-bitch answered me by asking ’don’t you know who I am?’”
“I said no, who the hell are you?” narrated Ogg.
Estrada apparently introduced himself as “THE sexy senator from the Philippines”, and that the bulge on his chest was the result of intense workout regimen he undertook months prior.
But when the senator sensed that Ogg was feeling sketchy with his response, Estrada flip-flopped and told him that he was seeking medical advice from US doctors for the said lumps.
File photo shows Estrada, asking Legarda if the money hidden inside his stomach looks suspicious. |
That’s when airport officials decided to frisk him.
Ogg added, “When he took off his shirt, we saw rectangular lumps in-place of his muscles, an unusual sight that does not resemble the six-packs you see on TV.”
Upon closer inspection with the help of a scalpel, they discovered bundles of money hidden inside Estrada’s ‘muscles’ and skin, that the senator was trying to bring in to the country.
“We counted millions worth of Pesos that we suspect belongs to the Filipinos,” said Ogg.
He added, “Mr. Estrada is now visually far from sexy after we emptied his body of money after a full cavity search.”
Stay tuned to SWN for further developments.
